Chapter 10

Throwing the demon through the cellar door had been unnecessary, but fun. I was a little disappointed to see the black flames come for it because that meant the fight was over. It had been a sturdy creature, little more than dumb muscle, but those kinds of brutes are still dangerous, even for me. We’d trashed the two floors above us as we’d fought, but I had to admit that the furious tussle had done me some good. It had helped abate the nervous, angry energy that the cuffs seemed to be pumping through me. And I’d managed a tour of the empty house as we’d bashed our way through it. Not much up there save a few boxes and a bed in one room. Although austere, the place looked well-kept. It was no hobo den, that much was certain.

I followed the demon down the basement stairs at a leisurely pace, taking my time. I heard heavy breathing and recognized Avery’s heartbeat right away, strong and excited. She was down there. The thought made me happier than it should have. It took a moment for me to gather up what composure I could find so I wouldn’t be weird.

“Sorry that took so long,” I said, trying to be reassuring. Her heartbeat kicked up a notch, and I felt a sudden burst of excitement run through her before she squashed it, just as I had my own. I caught sight of her as I descended the stairs, and she couldn’t have looked more perfect to me. Her head was tilted back, and her eyes were fastened firmly on me, the shotgun held ready in her hands. Blood-spattered from combat, a crimson smear decorated her forehead. She resembled a warrior woman from centuries past, painted in the blood of her enemies. I liked it. I liked it a lot. I tried to keep that thought from showing on my face as well as smooth my emotions over so she wouldn’t sense anything.

“It’s fine.” she replied, “I think I’ve got Malleus under control down here, but. . .” she paused as she gathered her thoughts, “but something’s definitely wonky about this whole thing.” She nodded at the silent figure on the floor, cuffed and unmoving. “I’d be willing to bet that’s him, but he doesn’t feel right.”

I clothed myself in my usual human glamour out of habit and was surprised to see a hint of disappointment flit across her face. I tried to ignore it for the moment. Something to look into later, I thought. “Doesn’t feel right? How so?” I moved closer and looked down at his face. He seemed about the right height and had the distinctive air of foul magick on him. That kind of power was hard to hide. Its aura clings to the user, making them easier for Grims like me to pick out. His energy had the same foul taint to it that I’d sensed at the playing field, but it had nearly dissipated. Strange.

I looked over at the mess nearby, a body nearly blown in half.
